SIMS TOTALLY DOMINANT DURING OFFICIAL SNETTERTON TEST
Alexander Sims produced a truly outstanding performance during official Formula Renault UK testing at Snetterton Circuit in Norfolk today, the Manor Competition driver totally dominating his rivals after comfortably lapping quickest in both sessions.
The 19-year-old Peterborough ace, backed by Italian firm ILIP, showed scintillating pace from the off and proved to be untouchable throughout the seven hours of testing, ending the day with a best lap of 1m 04.691 seconds (108.62mph) on combined times.
Alexander did actually lap even quicker than that, some three 10ths of a second faster in fact, although those particular laps were posted using special 'Thruxton' tyres with many of the drivers utilising today's session to prepare for the final two rounds of the season at the Hampshire venue less than a fortnight from now on 13th/14th October.
Such laps weren't permitted to be included on the official timing screens but of the times which could be counted, where regular FR 2.0 tyres were utilised, the Cambridgeshire star was still in imperious form, none of his rivals having an answer for his rapid pace.
In the four hour morning session, Alexander topped the times with a lap of 1m 05.030 seconds (108.05mph) to end the session 0.153 seconds clear of his nearest competitor and he then continued his incredible run during the afternoon to lap three 10ths of a second ahead of his closest rival with his best time of the day, 1m 04.691 seconds.
Thoroughly delighted with his day's work, the former Stamford School pupil and multiple karting champion is very quickly becoming established as one of the country's most promising and exciting young single-seater talents, a driver with an extremely bright future ahead of him.
Reflecting on the test, Alexander said: "We ran Thruxton tyres during the second half of the second session and lapped a good three 10ths of a second quicker than anyone which was very good. Using the regular 2.0-litre tyres we were fastest too so I'm absolutely delighted with how today has gone.
"It's been a very good test, the car was spot-on and the Manor guys did a fantastic job for me. I felt very comfortable today and feel I was driving well, every session we were strong and consistently fast. It's been a very productive day and has given us all a great deal of confidence for the final two rounds of the UK season at Thruxton."
Having also topped the times during an official Thruxton test in early August, Alexander is greatly looking forward to the last two rounds of his maiden campaign in cars and confidence is high he stands a terrific chance of adding to the debut victory he claimed at Donington Park National Circuit in July.
"For sure I'm aiming to challenge at the front, we were fast during the Thruxton test earlier in the year and obviously very quick today so I see no reason why we can't fight for a win. I'm certainly looking for nothing less than the top three at Thruxton and I'm confident we can achieve that."
Qualifying for round 19 of the 2007 Formula Renault UK Championship is scheduled to take place at 10.20 on Saturday, 13th October, with the round 20 session expected to follow at 14.40. Both races will be held on Sunday, 14th October, and are set to begin at 12.20 and 17.00 respectively.
