BARC VICE-CHAMPION RUSSELL CONFIRMS FRUK CAMPAIGN
Reigning Formula Renault BARC Vice-Champion Matt Russell has officially confirmed his entry into the 2006 Formula Renault UK Championship, driving for his family's own Russell Racing team.
The 22-year-old Anglo-Finnish driver, who resides inHarlesden,North London, will start the season with just two full years of motor racing experience under his belt but after setting competitive times in pre-season testing to date, hopes are high of a promising campaign.
After contesting the BRDC Single-Seater Winter Championship in 2003, Matt's first foray into Formula Renault came with a drive in the full UK series the following year before he opted to contest the more cost-effective Formula Renault BARC Championship in 2005.
Driving in the headline FR 2000 Class, Matt achieved eight pole positions and took three race wins en route to the Vice-Champion's position. Now, however, he hopes to make an impact in the prestigious full Formula Renault UK category during a season which will be particularly notable on a personal level as it marks Russell Racing's competitive debut.
Speaking on his hopes for the 2006 season, Matt commented: "I'm delighted to be back in Formula Renault UK and I'm confident it'll be a good year. The very best aspect of the new season though is the opportunity of racing for my family's own team -- it's a dream come true.
"Our team manager, Rob Croot, helped me immensely during my first full season of car racing and we've been good friends ever since so it's fantastic to be able to re-establish our working relationship.
"We know it's going to be an incredibly tough season but we're looking forward to the challenge ahead of us. Formula Renault UK is the most competitive championship of its kind in the world and now I have another year's experience under my belt I can't wait for the first round to begin."
The Russell Racing team came into existence last November following a buyout of the former assets of front-running Formula Renault UK outfit Team JLR. While still actively seeking drivers to partner Matt in the British Touring Car Championship-supporting Formula Renault UK series, the team also plans to run cars in Formula Renault BARC.
Official pre-season testing will begin with a two-day outing at Silverstone National Circuit in Northamptonshire, commencing next Wednesday, 1st March.
