PERSONAL BEST DELIGHTS RUSSELL DURING FINAL TEST
Formula Renault UK competitor Matt Russell produced a career-best performance at Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire today during the final day of official pre-season testing.
The 22-year-old, driving for the Doncaster-based Russell Racing team, saved his best for last during the two day test, his fastest lap of 1m 17.903 seconds (98.29mph) coming this afternoon and placing him just over a second outside the quickest time of all.
Having never lapped as fast before at the 2.1-mile venue, Matt certainly ended the fourth and final official test of the pre-season on a high and the Harlesden resident is now looking forward to the start of the 2006 championship which will take place just two weeks from now at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit in Kent.
Matt commented: "This afternoon things really started to come together nicely for us, we've definitely progressed well over the last two days and today in particular. I was disappointed with my time on the first day but I knew we could be quicker and so it proved today, knocking almost a second off my time.
"To have gone faster round Croft than I ever have before is fantastic and I know I was losing several 10ths of a second in a couple of places so, all in all, I'm very happy with our pace. The car has been good and we've certainly moved forward throughout this test so I'm very pleased on the whole and looking forward to the first race now."
Russell Racing team manager Rob Croot was delighted at the conclusion of today's test and is hopeful of a strong showing at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit, Matt's 'home' race meeting, in a fortnight's time.
He said: "It's been an excellent day. Matt has never lapped Croft in such a quick time so we're absolutely delighted with his performance and progress and it's always good to end a test session on a positive note.
"Things just got better and better during the day and I think I can say it's probably been the most productive test we've had as a team which is a great sign ahead of the opening round of the season."
Rounds one and two of the 2006 Formula Renault UK Championship will take place at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit on 8th/9th April.
