METCALFE UNDERLINES TITLE POTENTIAL AT SILVERSTONE
Fleet teenager Jeremy Metcalfe served the Formula Renault UK Championship with a timely reminder of his title credentials at Silverstone National Circuit today after coming within just two 100ths of a second of setting the fastest time in official testing.
The 17-year-old Team Lemac AKA sensation concluded his second day at the 1.6-mile Northamptonshire venue with a best lap of 54.449 seconds (108.36mph), a mere 0.028 seconds shy of pre-season championship favourite Sebastian Hohenthal.
For the first of the day's three sessions Jeremy remained on old tyres, as he had for the whole of yesterday's test, and yet still managed to achieve the fifth fastest time. Towards the end of the second session however, the team fitted a fresh set of tyres to his car and Jeremy instantly made the most of them by shooting to the top of the timing screens.
His best lap of 54.493 seconds (108.27mph) placed the Hampshire ace over a 10th of a second clear of his nearest rival and then, during session three, Jeremy went quicker still but just missed out on the top spot by a literal whisker.
"I'm very happy, today went really well and we certainly showed what we're capable of when on an equal footing with everyone else", commented a delighted Jeremy at the end of the second day.
"Yesterday's times were deceiving as we used old tyres in every session and most of the other front-runners used new rubber. When we put new tyres on today at the end of the second session I was able to get the best out of them very quickly and I think that's very significant for us, it shows we should be strong in qualifying this year.
"The third session was more about consolidating our position at the top and while it was a shame to miss out on the quickest time in the end by just a couple of 100ths of a second, I'm still very happy. It's a huge difference on where we were last year and I'm encouraged with the way things have gone -- I'm really looking forward to the season."
Snetterton Circuit in Norfolk hosts the next official pre-season Formula Renault UK test, beginning on Wednesday, 8th March, and concluding on Thursday, 9th March.
Jeremy added: "I like Snetterton and I'm confident we'll be fast at the end of the two days. I'm especially looking forward to this test as both days will be fully exclusive for Formula Renault UK so we'll have a lot of time to work towards finding a good set-up for the race there later in the year."
