FRONT ROW START FOR METCALFE AT BRANDS HATCH
Team Lemac AKA sensation Jeremy Metcalfe is on course to achieve his second race win in Formula Renault UK having secured a front row start for tomorrow's opening round of the 2006 season at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit in Kent.
In one of the closest qualifying battles in recent memory, the 17-year-old just missed out on pole position by the narrowest of margins -- 0.061 seconds to be exact -- but was still very happy indeed to be second on the grid for the first race of the year.
Jeremy's quickest lap of 44.255 seconds (99.74mph) was over three 10ths of a second faster than he managed during Friday's official pre-event test session and also saw him conclude the opening qualifying period as the best of the Team Lemac AKA drivers.
Qualifying for round two wasn't quite as Jeremy would have hoped but the BillChaser and Fathom Technologies-backed star still has a great chance of a solid result after achieving the sixth fastest time with a lap of 44.659 seconds (98.84mph).
With less than two 10ths of a second separating the Fleet teenager from the front of the grid for round two, it's clear to see the opening race meeting of the 2006 Formula Renault UK Championship will be incredibly competitive.
"I'm looking forward to tomorrow and while I am disappointed to have just missed out on pole position for round one, I'm very happy with our performance and confident we can have a very strong showing in both races", commented Jeremy after qualifying.
"In the first session there was absolutely nothing between the top three at the end and I think we'll see that replicated in the races tomorrow. It should be very close but if we can make a good start from the front row I think we have the pace to challenge for the win.
"Of course, I would have ideally liked a front row start for both races but that wasn't to be for the second round so I'll just have to make the best start I can and see where we are after the first lap. It's difficult to overtake here at Brands Hatch but I'll be giving it my all."
