JEREMY METCALFE -- 2006 SEASON PREVIEW
Brands Hatch Indy Circuit hosts the opening two rounds of the 2006 Formula Renault UK Championship in less than two week's time and Jeremy Metcalfe is aiming to start the new season the way he ended 2005 -- on the top step of the podium.
The 17-year-old, from Fleet in Hampshire, has enjoyed a productive pre-season of testing and with his victorious outing at Croft Circuit during round four of the 2005 Winter Championship still fresh in his memory, Jeremy is looking forward to the first two races of the season and hopes to start his campaign in winning ways.
Having said that, the Team Lemac AKA star is realistic enough to know the 2006 title battle has the potential to be the most fiercely contested Formula Renault UK season in the history of the championship and he's mindful of the challenge which awaits him in only his second full season of single-seater racing.
"The main aim this season from my point of view is to be consistent and, realistically, I think we can aim to be in the top three in the championship", said Jeremy. "It's fair to say I had a character-building season in 2005 but in some respects that has been good for me as I realise the amount of hard work which is needed to be a success.
"The whole team has gelled really well and testing has been good for us, I can't wait now for the season the start and to see where we are compared to the others. I'm confident qualifying will go well and at a circuit like Brands Hatch Indy it's so important to start from the front row of the grid so, hopefully, that's where I'll be for the first race."
Since signing for Team Lemac AKA prior to last November's Winter Championship, Jeremy has certainly come of age as a racing driver and is now rightly regarded as one of the true front-runners in Formula Renault UK and a potential race winner this year.
Furthermore, should Jeremy make a victorious start to his 2006 campaign, the Brands Hatch weekend will mark a double celebration as the Sunday of the race meeting, 9th April, coincides with his 18th birthday.
"It'd be fantastic to achieve a win under any circumstances but to do so on my 18th birthday would be a bit special", added Jeremy. "I'm just focusing and putting 100 per cent into doing the best job I possibly can. I'm confident we can have a successful season but if we're challenging for the title at the end I'll be absolutely delighted."
Qualifying for rounds one and two of the 2006 Formula Renault UK Championship takes place at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit in Kent on Saturday, 8th April, with both races to follow on Sunday, 9th April. Pre-event testing will take place on Friday, 7th April.
