Mixed Fortunes for Kenney at Fontana Opener
Sterling, Virginia (March 14, 2007) -- The 2007 Formula TR Pro Series 2000 Championship kicked off last weekend at the California Speedway with Virginia's Liam Kenney experiencing mixed fortunes at the Fontana track recording a DNF in the opening round on Saturday followed by a more encouraging fourth place effort on Sunday.
Making his Formula Renault 2.0-litre debut, having had a stellar rookie season in the 1600 class last year, the 15-year-old racer qualified his #95 Liam Kenney Motorsports entry fourth on the grid for Saturday's 13 lap sprint around the 2.8-mile Californian road course with a flying lap of 1m40.511s.
When the green flag dropped to herald the much anticipated start to the season Kenney fired himself into the mix giving chase to pole-sitter and last year's 2000 class runner-up John Knudsen. A full-course caution disrupted proceedings but Liam hoped to solidify a top-three finish at the re-start as he gunned down Knudsen and Billy Goshen ahead.
Unfortunately for Kenney, his planned attack came up short 10 laps in attempting to pass Goshen at Turn 3, the pair colliding with the subsequent damage forcing the #95 car out of the race. John Knudsen converted pole into the win to take top honors on the podium.
With the damage repaired Kenney took to the grid for Sunday's second round looking to make amends for Saturday's DNF and get some points on the board at Fontana. Lining up on the second row of the grid, Kenney's race met with some early drama as he bogged down at the start, a gear selection issue hampering his progress. Despite dropping a spot on the opening lap he was soon back up into fourth where he would remain through to the checkered flag with Billy Goshen collecting the win.
"While it wasn't a perfect weekend we can take some positives from it," reflected Kenney. "Overall the team did a great job considering this was our first event together. We know the areas where we have to work a little harder ahead of our return to the track next weekend. Saturday's DNF was pretty disappointing, especially as a podium was on the cards, but Sunday's race proved a bit more rewarding with our first points scored. I learned a lot from the weekend and can't wait to get back on track to build on those experiences!"
California Speedway again hosts Rounds 3 and 4 of the 2007 Formula TR Pro Series 2000 Championship this weekend, Saturday 17th -- Sunday 18th March.
