Skerlong triumphs in Vegas ahead of UK adventure
Mukilteo, Washington (October 19, 2006) -- Odyssey Motorsport's Carl Skerlong sealed the deal on his Formula TR Pro Series 2000 Championship-winning year by steering his Formula Renault 2.0-ltr to two more wins in the season-closing Rounds 19 and 20 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway last Sunday.
Having wrapped up the title at last month's double-header meeting in California, the 18-year-old, who similarly dominated proceedings on his way to the Formula TR Pro Series 1600 title in 2005, duly stuck his car on pole for Round 19 and romped away with his 15th win of the year beating John Knudsen to the checkered flag.
Round 20 later in the day saw Skerlong take the start from the rear of the field but this failed to trouble the new champion as he quickly scythed his way to the head of the pack at the stunning Las Vegas complex. Ending the season exactly how he started it back in March at the California Speedway with a brace of victories, Carl graced the top step of the podium for the final time in Round 20, his 2006 record totaling 16 wins in 19 starts.
Following the accompanying end-of-year Formula TR Pro Series awards banquet in Las Vegas on Sunday night, Carl then hopped on a trans-Atlantic flight to head to England to begin testing ahead of his participation in the Formula Renault UK with Michelin Winter Series racing with Fortec Motorsport -- 2006 Formula Renault UK Champions.
Carl's first taste of the UK came at Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire, the track playing host to Rounds 3 and 4 of the 4-race Winter Series in November. Racking up 100 laps around the 2.12-mile track yesterday, Skerlong followed that up today with 97 test laps, this time in changeable conditions, the day starting off wet before some late afternoon sunshine allowed for slick tires and tumbling lap times.
Commenting after what's been a busy few days for the Washington-native, Carl reflected:
"Well it's been a crazy week but everything's gone really well. It felt good to round out my time in the Formula TR Pro Series with back-to-back wins. I've had a great time in the series and it's been an excellent training ground as I look to further my open-wheel racing career. We didn't have too long to celebrate following Sunday's successes as I headed here to England for the first of my Formula Renault UK Winter Series tests. Fortec Motorsport has an impressive set-up and we ran well over both days at Croft which is encouraging heading to next week's tests at Snetterton and Brands Hatch."
The 2006 Formula Renault UK with Michelin Winter Series kicks off at the famous Brands Hatch circuit, located south of London, with Rounds 1 and 2, Saturday 4th -- Sunday 5th November, followed by Rounds 3 and 4 hosted at Croft, North Yorkshire, on Saturday 11th November.
The Formula Renault UK with Michelin Championship has helped propel the likes of Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Pizzonia into Formula One with 2006 GP2 Series Champion, Lewis Hamilton, also a title-winning graduate of the championship.
