Battle for Northern European Cup continues at Assen
The Formula Renault Northern European Cup (NEC) is halfway its international racing calendar. After racing in Germany and Finland, twenty- four formula cars are back in the Netherlands to fight for the 2009 title. Round five of the championship will be held at the world famous TT circuit of Assen, during the tenth edition of the Rizla Racing Days on the 8th and 9th of August.
With a different team on first, second and third place in the overall standings of the championship, the Northern European Cup can be proud of its strong and competitive field. Portuguese Felix Da Costa does not only lead the NEC at this moment, but is also in charge of the standings in EUROCUP, indicating the high level of NEC.
The four Dutch drivers, participating in the series get one last chance to prove their skills to their home audience. Mathijs Harkema for Van Amersfoort Racing is progressing over the season and Bart Hylkema will be eager to match the great performance in Finland, where he scored his first podium. MP Motorsport boys Nigel Melker and Daniel de Jong have so far added a lot of excitement to all NEC races and are expected to give everything they have on the tarmac in Assen.
After a long summer break, the teams and drivers will meet each other again among the good company of the ATS German Formula 3 series, the CIK-FIA European Superkart Championship, and impressive motorbike series such as Dutch Supersport and Superbike. Having a great selection of karting, formula racing and motorbikes together, the organization claims to have the biggest combined motorsport event in the Netherlands this year.
On a different note, the organization of Rizla Racing Day suffered a considerable loss when Michael Schumacher announced his comeback to Formula One, replacing injured Felipe Massa. The all-time record F1 Champion was supposed to participate in the Superbike race, but had to cancel his entry because of the necessary preparation for Ferrari.
