Kuba Giermaziak racing in Spa-Francorchamps
The rookie driver faced a tough weekend during the 7th round of the Formula Renault Northern European Cup, held at the famous Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium.
The combination of the unusually long circuit, and two short sessions for Free Practice meant that every lap was crucial for Kuba to learn yet another new track. Taking all this information into the double qualifying session held early on Saturday morning, Kuba was one of the first drivers into the track. A mistake on his fastest lap cost him some time, but his effort was still enough for 11th place. He went into the second session determined to make up for this but a red flag interrupted his run, and the young polish driver had to settle for 11th once again.
Suffering from handling problems in his car, Kuba had an uneventful first race and followed a group of cars locked in battle ahead of him to finish in 10th place.
Kuba was fired up to improve on this in Race 2, but lost his front wing in a first corner incident and had to come into the pits for repairs. This ruined any chance of a good result, but the rookie went back out and put in a series of good laps, indicating that another Top 10 finish was entirely possible.
Reflecting on a difficult weekend, Kuba commented that "This was hard, as there was very little time to learn the track. Qualifying was ok, but we could have done better. There were some problems with the setup for the first race, which didn't help. The team corrected this for the second race, but unfortunately we had no chance to improve after the incident in the first corner."
The Formula Renault Northern European Cup comes to a close next weekend, for the 8th and final round in Hockenheim.
Frank Kechele, Kuba's teammate at the Motopark Academy secured the Formula Renault NEC title this weekend. Congratulations Frank!
