Filipe Albuquerque wins NEC FR 2.0 championship.
SALZBURGRING - Filipe Albuquerque (POR/Motopark Academy) has won the Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0. The Portuguese driver finished second in the first race on the Salzburgring (Austria) and scored enough points to clinch the title. Victory in race one went to his team mate Sebastien Buemi (CH/Motopark Academy). Mihai Marinescu (ROM/Petrom District Racing) finished in third place. The second race was again dominated by Team Motopark Oschersleben. This time Albuquerque won, followed closely by Buemi. Marinescu scored another third place. After 16 races Albuquerque scored 312 points in 16 races. Chris van der Drift (NZL/JD Motorsport) ends the championship in second place with 267 points while Xavier Maassen (NED/JD Motorsport) was third, having scored 252 points.
The battle for the title was over after the first race of the weekend. Van der Drift was hit from behind just after the start, which meant Albuquerque had little problem taking the title on Saturday. Buemi dominated the race from start to finish and won the race. Albuquerque finished second, Marinescu was third. The Romanian driver crossed the line one second ahead of Maassen. Sergey Afanasiev (RUS/Lukoil Racing) finished fifth. John Edwards (USA/Motorsport Arena) and Mervyn Kool (NED/AR Motorsport) followed each other over the finish line in sixth and seventh place. Van der Drift was classified twelfth in the end.
On Sunday Marinescu started the race from pole position. Starting from second place Albuquerque waited for his chance and passed the Romanian driver in lap eight. Buemi followed. In the final stages of the race a big crash involving John Edwards, Sergey Afanasiev and Frederic Vervisch (BEL/SL Formula Racing) brought out the safety car. Albuquerque crossed the finish line behind the safety car and won the last round of the season. Buemi finished second, Marinescu completed the podium.
