NURBURG, 26 AUGUST 2007 -- In the fifth round of the Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 Gwendolyn Hertzberger made considerable progress again. Despite the fact that the result was not completely satisfying, the young Hertzberger was full of devotion when she started her fight with the rest of the field. The first race she had to abandon early on after hit by another driver. The second race however was exciting and after a lot of fighting she was in the midfield. Due to a spin in the final minutes Hertzberger ended her weekend in twentieth place.
FREE PRACTICE + QUALIFYING:
In the first free practice Hertzberger worked on a set-up for the remained of the weekend. The AR Motorsport driver was in the right swing straight away and was able to find the brake points on the 3.618 meter long circuit in no-time. She ended the session in eighteenth position. She started the final practice session on Friday afternoon with a good feeling. Hertzberger went out on old tyres and was able to improve her fastest lap time so far. After getting a new set of tyres she went out on the track again. While trying to set a fast lap time she was forced to abandon her flying lap when the red flags were shown. After the track went green again she only had a couple of minutes left to improve her time. She eventually ended up in 27th place.
In the first qualifying session on Saturday afternoon Hertzberger went for it. She was at the same level as on Friday, but was unable to peak the tyres for the ultimate lap. She had to be content with 26th place. In the second twenty-minute long session she was blocked in her fast lap by another car. The 27th place on the grid fell to her share.
RACE 01 + 02
In the first race on Saturday afternoon Gwendolyn did well and managed to stay out of trouble. She was able to get into the 22nd place in the opening lap. She kept her head cool and climbed up to eighteenth place. With lap times of 1:27.5 she was in the right rhythm. Unfortunately things went wrong when she tried to pass a slower competitor in lap six. Gwendolyn thought the other driver would move over but instead he turned in. Gwendolyn was unable to avoid him and with a bent left front wheel she had to abandon.
Despite some wheelspin she had a good start on Sunday afternoon in the second race. In the first two corners she was able to pass several drivers and because of the chaos in the midfield she quickly moved into seventeenth place. She tried to get even further up ahead until she spun. Fortunately she was able to rejoin the race and gained back a position in the final stages of the race. After eighteen laps she crossed the line in twentieth place.
GWENDOLYN HERTZBERGER: "Despite not being able to fully manage the race I wanted it, I am reasonably satisfied with the weekend. After the free practices sessions I did all I could to get the best possible qualifying result, but was unable to peak the tyres. The pieces of the puzzle just did not fell into place. The biggest win I got here was keeping focussed all the time. I really did enjoy the race and fought some nice battles. We will be testing at Oschersleben next Wednesday and Thursday. We will prepare us there for the races that will take place at the end of September."
