Gelles Racing announces a full line-up
March 5th. -- Team Owner Bob Gelles is proud to announce today he has completed his three-car line-up for the 2004 North America Formula Renault 2000 series. Three talented young men from three countries will bear the colours of Gelles team when the third season gets underway at Phoenix International Raceway five weeks from now. Brazilian star driver Gustavo Sondermann is returning after finishing the Winter Invitational series in third place. Canadian Brandon Thomas announced yesterday he will drive in the series with the Virginia-based team. American Michael Yager who started his open-wheel career this winter will now tackle the longer summer championship.
"We are strong and we are ready, declared Gelles. We have three skilled young pilots with different backgrounds equally eager to demonstrate what they are capable of on the best race tracks in United States and Canada. We believe this is the best team we have put together in three years but on the other hand the series has never been so competitive with drivers coming from all over the world now that it is recognised as a true Formula Renault championship. I think each of our drivers will be a contender in his own way."
Brandon Thomas, #2 TenFore car
Now 21, the London, Ontario driver is an example of pure talent. He started racing only a few years ago but he has developed the capacity of analysing and understanding the feel and the reactions of a racing car. Yet, on the race tarmac, he is a hard charger that never quits. After racing for a few years in United Kingdom, Brandon is happy to be back in America and take part in four races (at least!) in his mother country. Rambo, his nickname, will draw a lot of respect this season.
Michael Yager, #3 Mid-America Motorsports
Still only 18, Effingham, Illinois Michael Yager has tinkered with cars all his life. 2004 is the coming of age year for this rookie. Considering his experience, the Winter rounds were a tremendous learning curve and Michael proved he could hold his ground in this highly competitive series. He will set his eyes on the rookie championship every time the red lights go out.
Gustavo Sondermann, #4 Corduroy Suape Fabrics car
A Sao Paulo native, Gustavo was a championship contender the day he raced Formula Renault. He joined Gelles Team for the last weekend of the 2003 season-- earned pole position and won a race outright! He was back in January and won again a round of the Winter five-race showdown. He finished third in the series, collected $20,000 for his efforts, was the first driver to test the new Renault V6 in North America on the same day he turned 22! Gustavo will no doubt be one of the stars of the 2004 season.
The oldest team in Formula Renault racing in North America, Gelles Racing will enter three cars in the 2004 North America Formula Renault 2000 series with sponsorship from Corduroy Suape Textil, Mid-America Motorworks, TenFore and USA Today. The series is sanctioned by Grand-American Racing, FIA and Renault Sport. For more information, you can visit our web site at www.gellesracing.com. Test days are scheduled in mid-March. Tentative schedule follows.
