North American Formula Renault invited to Molson Indy Toronto
Mont Tremblant, Que (May 21 04)--North American Formula Renault announced today that the 2004 schedule will see the series bring its exciting standing starts and competitive racing to Toronto as a support race for the Molson Indy Toronto event on the weekend of July 9-11 with the Champ Car World Series.
"This is a fantastic addition to our schedule," said North American Formula Renault General Manager Brett Ross. "Our teams and competitors expressed an interest in being a part of the Toronto weekend, so we are very pleased to be able to do so. We have tremendous support from Canadian race fans, as well as significant Canadian involvement in the series, with two teams and four drivers participating, so we are looking forward to putting on a great show."
The race weekend will mark the first of three consecutive Canadian events for North American Formula Renault, as the series will travel to Vancouver as part of the Molson Indy Vancouver weekend, and then head west for the Trois Rivieres event the following weekend of July 31-August 1st .
Toronto's 1.755-mile temporary street circuit poses a significant challenge for the racers, with a variety of high-and low-speed corners forcing the teams to find the best compromise in their set ups, with the drivers speeding through the course lined with concrete walls, which offer no compromise at all.
The North American Formula Renault Championships are sanctioned by Grand American, and provide a ladder for drivers to develop their talent, with a full in-house open-wheel progression available. The series held its first-ever race weekend in April at Phoenix International Raceway.
The Formula Renault V6 Championship is the top rung on the North American Formula Renault Championship ladder, which also includes the North American Formula Renault 1600 Championship and the North American Formula Renault 2000 Championship. The Formula Renault V6 is expected to make its North American competition debut in the latter stages of the North American Formula Renault 2000 season in advance of the 2005 championship.
