Gomes leads opening practice at Mid-Ohio
Lexington, OH(6 August 04)-- Marcos Gomes of Brazil paced the opening day of Formula Renault practice on Friday with a fast lap time of 1:22.794-seconds in preparation for Sundays race as part of the EMCO Gears Road Racing Classic at Mid-Ohio. Championship points leader Juan Martin Ponte was close behind in his Eurointernational machine, with Toronto pole winner Mark Wilkins netting the third fastest time of the day. Ponte's teammate Ricardo Imery was fourth quickest, with Gomes' teammate GTI/Roshfrans driver Katherine Legge in fifth.
Gomes has impressed in his first visit to the 2.258-mile Mid-Ohio circuit and is feeling confident about his chances for the pole, but he knows the competition is not going to give up easily.
"My car is quite good, but I know that the times will be very close tomorrow," Gomes said. "I will have to work hard to be fastest again, but I feel like the team has prepared an excellent car, and our chance for pole should be good."
Gomes, who leapt up in the points standings to second after winning the last round at Trois-Rivières, feels as though the track suits his style.
"There are some fast corners here, like at Watkins Glen, and I really enjoy high speed corners, but there are also the slower more technical sections that you have to be very precise, so its quite a challenge."
Gomes and the drivers in the very competitive field will be contesting the five bonus points for pole position Saturday at 2:00 EST, with Sundays twenty-lap race scheduled to get underway at 11:15 AM.
