Gelles driver is now second in the standings; Sondermann clinches second place in Tremblant round
Mont-Tremblant, Quebec. -- Brazilian driver Gustavo Sondermann drove with consistency for 18 laps in the second round of the North American Formula Renault series and earned a rewarding second place after starting from the second row. The Sao Paulo native was closing in on eventual winner Mark Wilkins when a full-course yellow slowed the cars and held then in a single file until the checkered flag. Sondermann also scored valuable points with the fastest lap in the race and now stands second in the championship behind Wilkins.
"I'm very happy with this result, said Sondermann. Gelles worked hard to give me a strong car and my Corduroy Suape Textil car was getting better as the race progressed. I could keep the pace with the front runners in the first laps, but I could not gain ground on them. On lap 12, after Gomes and Ponte took each other out, I started to close the gap on Wilkins and we could have fought to the wire if the yellow had not come two laps before the finish. I'm happy to get five points for the fastest lap since this puts me in second place in the standings. "
Good outing for Yager
Michael Yager had good memories from Le Circuit with a win last year in Skip Barber series, but he struggled all weekend to find the proper settings on his Mid-America Motorworks car. "I had electrical problems on Friday morning and that made it difficult to set my car for the afternoon qualifying. I ran good laps in the race and got up to eighth place, my best finish in the Formula Renault series." Yager was also best American and best Rookie in the race.
Brandon Thomas started his race on fifth row in the TenFore car and was pushing to get seventh place when he lost control in corner #3 and slid off the track to end his day. After two rounds, Yager now holds 9th position while Thomas is 12th
Next round: Watkins Glen
The North American Formula Renault series next round will be in New-York state as the teams will meet again at Watkins Glen on June 19-20. "Watkins Glen is another fast track, concluded Sondermann after the podium ceremony. I enjoy tracks like Tremblant and the Glen: they represent a true challenge for the drivers. The championship still has a long way to go but I prefer to be in second place at this time and only have one guy to go after."
Next outing for Gelles Racing will be in BeaveRun, Pennsylvania in two weeks where the team will test for again. The 2004 North America Formula Renault Pro series is sanctioned by Grand American Road Racing and organized by Race Team Promotions.
