Brandon Thomas leads Gelles Racing drivers in Mid-Ohio
Lexington, August 10th. -- Canadian Brandon Thomas completed the sixth round of the North American Formula Renault championship in the top 5, his second best result this season. Thomas, from London Ontario started from the fourth row on the starting grid and climbed three positions. The 20-lap race saw the Yager brothers finish in seventh and tenth place, with Michael still leading the rookie standings, as well as the highest placing American and younger brother Blake debuting in FR2000.
" We wished Brandon had made a better time in the qualifying session, claimed team owner Bob Gelles. Unfortunately, he could only drive one lap at speed before his car was sidelined with a minor problem. That gave him 8th place. In the race, he was very strong around the 2.258-mile road course and passed three times for positions. Michael (Yager) was also on par with his past performances and still enjoys top place among the rookies with a 33-point lead. We think his brother Blake, in his maiden race in FR2000 did very well under the circumstances."
Thomas, now eight in the points standings
After a slow start, Brandon Thomas has been earning valuable points in the Western Union/ TenFore #2 car. He was second in Toronto, sixth in Trois-Rivières and now fifth at Mid-Ohio. He is now lying in eight place in the season standings with teammate Michael Yager just four points ahead, given that he missed Round 3 at Watkins Glen.
The Yager family
This weekend in Mid-Ohio, there was a second car with the Yager name and Mid-America Motorworks logo on it. Blake, 16-year old brother of 18-year old Michael, was getting acquainted with the Lexington natural road course. Blake is entered in the Barber Formula Dodge series, like Michael was last year, and was making best of his seat time in the Renault single seater in preparation for his upcoming Dodge race in a few weeks. Michael started on the fourth row and ended seventh while Blake did the same but from the 10th place. Both were happy with their performances as they have planned to reach the front of the pack over a couple of years.
Next round: Homestead
Gelles Racing cars will now undergo some testing at Gingerman in Michigan over the next few weeks with the next round taking place at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Homestead, Florida on September 10 to 12.
