Fontana event cancelled
(28 October 04)--North American Formula Renault series managers of RaceTeam Promotions confirmed that the anticipated season finale event at California Speedway has been cancelled.
"Management of RaceTeam Promotions regrets having to cancel the races scheduled for California Speedway due to insufficient confirmed entries received by the pre-registration deadline Friday, October 15th," said RaceTeam Promotions President John Kolody.
"The decision to replace the cancelled races has not been made, with various alternatives under consideration," said Kolody. "The declaration of the 2004 Championship winners will be confirmed based on the outcome of the decision about the balance of the season."
The championship battle tightened considerably after the series' debut double-header weekend at Barber Motorsports Park earlier this month. Juan Martin Ponte, who has lead the points for most of the season, scored two fourth-place finishes during the weekend, but saw his championship points lead reduced from thirty-nine points to just thirteen points over GTI/Roshfrans' Marcos Gomes after Gomes scored a win and a second place.
The points battle remains wide open, with the top five drivers Ponte, Gomes, Barber round eight winner Antoine Bessette, Mark Wilkins, and Ricardo Imery, all still contenders for the inaugural North American Formula Renault 2000 Championship.
The series is working to find a solution, and will be making an announcement as soon as details have been finalized.
