North American Formula Renault 2000 Championship battle heats up
Top five drivers are all still in the fight with just two rounds remaining
(15 October 04)- North American Formula Renault staged the series first double-header event last weekend with rounds seven and eight taking place at the impressive Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama in support of the Grand American Porsche 250 weekend. GTI/Roshfrans driver Marcos Gomes bolstered his championship hopes when he netted the maximum forty-two points available in round seven by qualifying on pole, winning the race, and recording the fastest lap of the race. Antoine Bessette moved up one position in the championship to third when he duplicated the feat in Sundays race for round eight, keeping his cool in difficult conditions to take the win from pole and score the fastest lap as well.
The race weekend did not go the way that championship points leader Juan Ponte was hoping, as he saw his championship lead reduced from thirty-nine points to just thirteen despite scoring two strong fourth-place finishes in his debut race weekend with Gelles Racing.
Wilkins, who was locked in a tie for second in the championship before the race weekend, fell to fourth just five points behind Bessette after Wilkins took second place in round seven, and backed that up with another top-five finish in round eight.
Ricardo Imery lies fifth in the championship, some sixty-eight points behind Ponte, but has a mathematical chance at the title should he score all the remaining points in the last two rounds. Imery was forced to accept an eight place finish in round eight after going off-track in the wet as he battled Bessette for the lead.
With the series heading to Fontana to stage the final two races of the season on the weekend of October 30-31, the points battle remains wide open, with the top five drivers Juan Martin Ponte, Marcos Gomes, Antoine Bessette, Mark Wilkins, and Ricardo Imery, all still contenders for the inaugural North American Formula Renault 2000 Championship.
