Gomes and Bessette take poles at Barber Motorsports Park
BIRMINGHAM, AL-(9 October 04)--Marcos Gomes and Antoine Bessette each netted pole positions for the North American Formula Renault rounds seven and eight respectively as the series stages its first double header weekend of the season at the 2.33-mile Barber Motorsports Park near Birmingham, Alabama. Gomes led the first qualifying session, held in clear conditions on Friday, powering to a best lap time of 1:24.270-seconds at the facility, while Saturday's wet session allowed Bessette, who has always been strong in the wet, to come to the fore and take his first pole of the season.
Gomes will start alongside Mark Wilkins for round seven, and is itching to get back to racing and is glad he has two chances for checkers this weekend.
"I like that we are racing here twice this weekend because I have a good car, and I really like this track," said Gomes. "It's a very interesting circuit with lots of medium and high-speed corners, so it suits my style."
Gomes is also happy to have two races after his Saturday qualifying session ended before it started as he got caught out by some standing water in his first lap of the session.
"I was the first driver out on the track, and I came across some water, and that was that-I just spun off and the car was damaged enough that I couldn't keep going, so I will have some work to do in the race on Sunday!"
The pole is the first of the season for Aim Autosport's Bessette, who took third on the grid in the first qualifying session and then put his experience as a rally driver to use in the heavy rain to take the pole.
"I like running in the rain-I think it's a great challenge to keep the car controlled while also trying to be very fast, so I'm happy to take the pole and get the front row start on Sunday," said Bessette.
Toronto-round podium finisher Brandon Thomas will start alongside of Bessette after also taking his best qualifying position of the season. Series points leader Juan Ponte has adapted quickly to his new team Gelles Racing, and will line up on the second row for round seven.
Round seven of the North American Formula Renault Championship is scheduled to stage its exciting standing start at 5:10 PM on Saturday, with round eight getting underway on Sunday at 3:30 PM.
