HENKI WALDSCHMIDT SHOWS GOOD PERFORMANCE AT SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS!
SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, 04 JUNE 2006 - Henki Waldschmidt left the Belgian track at Spa-Francorchamps with his heads up. The only Dutchman in the Italian Formula Renault 2.0 championship finished the first race as 5th and had to give up during the second race due to technical problems. The 17 year old who was admitted to the 'Toyota Young Drivers Programme' (TDP) in the beginning of the year currently places 6th in the championship with 48 points overall.
FREE PRACTICES + QUALIFYINGS:
The races of the Italian Formula Renault 2.0 championship did not take place in Italy this time but on the legendary race track in Spa- Francorchamps. The 6,975km long track includes a number of great and fast turn such as Blanchimont, Pouhon and of course Eau Rouge. On Thursday and Friday 4 free free practices were held to find the right set-up for the qualifying and races on Saturday and Sunday. In the first practice, Waldschmidt placed 12th on a wet track (2:36.758). In the second practice the driver of Prema Power Team placed 10th on a semi-wet track (2:39.536), while he was able to advance to the 5th place at the final practice on Thursday. With a time of 2:38.585 he outperformed his teammates Edoardo Montara and Martin Plowman. During the only practice on Friday, Waldschmift came in 12th on a now dry track. The second qualifying was the time for Henki to attack. He had started the first qualifying with new tires and placed 11th. After changing a few minor things and his tires he finished 11th again.
RACE 01 + 02:
The first race began chaotic. Second on the grid, (AP Motorsport) from Romania missed the start and was hit by Pablo Sanches Lopez from behind. Henki was able to get around Marinescu's car and advanced 2 places. When the safety car left the track after the crash, Henki was able to increase his pace. The driver with the number 2 passed a number of competitors and advanced to position 6. In the last lap of the 11 lap race he passed one more driver and finished the race as 5th. In the race on Sunday, he caught a good start again. He passed 3 other drivers at the start already and went into the Eau Rough as 8th. 1 lap later he was already 7th. In the third lap he advanced to the 5th place by overtaking Sebastini. His advancement was stopped by the Italian of IT Loox Racing Car who had hit his car's front right. He still tried to finish the race and secure some points for the championship but had to quit 1 lap later.
HENKI WALDSCHMIDT: 'Despite the fact that I had to quit the last race I am happy with this weekend. I fought my way to the top during both races. Other than most of the other drivers I had never been on this track and had to find the right set-up for races and qualifyings under constantly changing conditions. In the last free practice I only had 30 minutes on a dry track. Having made all these experiences and having learned a lot this weekend I hope to come back more often. It really is a great track with many challenging turns. This is where the men are separated from the boys. In two weeks I am going to race again in the Eurocup Formule Renault 2.0. Istanbul will be a completely new track for me again.'
