Cresswell to race Formula Renault at Brands Hatch.

Former Formula Palmer Audi race winner, Gideon Cresswell will take the next step on the motorsport ladder at his home circuit of Brands Hatch this coming weekend when he makes his debut in the Formula Renault championship.

Cresswell had a shakedown test with series regulars Cliff Dempsey Racing two weeks ago and will stay with the team for the upcoming race. Although the deal is a one off, the Maidstone-based driver will be looking for a strong result in front of his local supporters.

"I've been considering Formula Renault for a while now so this is a big step for me," Cresswell said. "We tested at Brands a few weeks ago and despite using old tyres, I was able to get the feel of the car. Although there are no plans to compete in any further rounds this season, I'm racing with a view to doing the full season in 2003.

"A good result on Sunday would go a long way towards helping me secure support from local companies. Fortunately, I know the circuit well and hopefully I'll have the home crowd support."

Cresswell is one of Kent's brightest racing prospects, having finished third overall in last year's Formula Palmer Audi Championship with three wins to his credit. A previous winner in the Kent County Formula Ford series and the 1999 Formula Ford 1600 Winter Series champion, he recently partnered Maxi Jazz Racing's Fiesta driver Helen Moore in round one of the European Endurance Racing Club's Britcar Championship.

Round six of the Formula Renault Championship takes place at 14.30 on Sunday June 30th.
