Giorgio Mondini Fastest in FRV6 Test at Paul Ricard
Stefano Proetto 8th and 10th
LE CASTELLET, France. March 6, 2004 - Giorgio Mondini has been the fastest in the official Formula Renault V6 tests at Paul Ricard circuit with the new track-record of 1'21"55 and 1'19"38 on March 3 and 4.
The Italian driver, behind the wheels of #7 IPS/Grapeking/ACM/Cioe'/Boss/VIP/Eurointernational 2004 Tatuus, has dominated morning and afternoon sessions on March 3, on the 3.847 Km configuration 3C, already used by FRV6 last December with the new track official track record of 1'21"55. "Has been a first good day for us " said Mondini" because the car has been good out of the box for the perfect set up of our Technical Director
Nicola Sgotto and the fantastic work of my crew. We have worked on different thinks and the several fastest laps have arrived without push at the limit. The car with the 2004 kit, with carbon brakes and new shocks is very different from last year, but I think at Ricard we have confirmed our 2003 post season top performances in Misano and Paul Ricard last November and December". Mondini has been the fastest of the 20 cars/drivers field, and is on pole for the third time in a row during official Renault Sport test days for FRV6.
Stefano Proetto on #50 Rotter Invest/GNI Touch/Lista/Top of Sports/Eurointernational 2004 Tatuus, with 1'22"36 has posted the 8th fastest time the first day, running the first real test in dry weather in FRV6.
"I have taken time to learn the use of the new carbon brakes and every lap I feel more confortable with the car" said Proetto" I can improve a lot my times but today are more important the long run for my testing program and at Albacete the rain and the snow have limited my km on the new car and now I need to make the best use of Ricard track and sun."
In the second day of testing has been used the faster configuration 2A of 4.087 km, with Mondini 5th with 1'19"90 and Proetto 6th with 1'19"93 at the end of the morning session. Both drivers have dedicated the afternoon to different test with brakes, shocks and aero packages.
By 3.30 pm, Giorgio Mondini has reached the pole with 1'19"54, followed to a 260 km spin at Signe corner, generating safety concern at the track director for his running lines.
Mondini, despite the official warnings, has continued to run hard on curbs and run off area, due to a very low drag aero package used for compensate an engine low on power, ready for rebuilt after Ricard test, with an un-official record pole lap of 1'19"38. After protest from other Teams and for the preview warnings received, the track Director has not allowed further Mondini laps with 30' left in the session, and has disallowed all times recorded by Mondini in the second day of test, non timing his laps after the third warning.
Eurointernational accepts Paul Ricard decision but support Giorgio Mondini reasons behind his on track activities, during tests of components, when he never has been put in dangerous other drivers or track structures.
In the afternoon, Stefano Proetto has not being able to improve his morning best time, due to increase gearbox problems, ending 10th in the 20 cars/drivers field of the second day.
Eurointernational will complete the pre-season tests in Valencia, Spain next March 13-14.
