Race 1 "Grand Race" - Saturday 1st May 2004
Neel Jani took a brilliant 2nd place on Magny-Cours Grand race from 3rd place on the grid. After a difficult season start due to accidents caused by other competitors, the young swiss started his effort to get back in the fight for the Championship win. Later in the afternoon DAMS was informed that the car of Neel Jani was excluded of the race.
Jean-Paul Driot : "This is the first time it happens since the team was created in 1989. Neel's car has been excluded of the race because 2 little screws which have no influence on the performance of the car were lost during the race. The car has been declared by the scrutineer not in conformity with the regulation. Even the stewards admitted there was no cheating and that we could not get any advantage with this, the car had to be excluded. Memo and Bruce have been hit by PROETTO today, one more time the race had many accident and I deplore that nothing has changed on that point. The team is really shocked by all of this but we are back on work to get the successes we are expecting."
Memo Rojas and Bruce Lorgere-Roux, hit by the same driver, did not get points from this 5th round.
Memo Rojas : "After a good start I passed 1 car and my lap times were good enough to catch the cars in front (in the 6 quickest). When I got close of Danielsson it became very difficult because he had an oil leak, I could not get close of him because I could not see anything and the car was sliding on his oil. Our pit stop was excellent but when I got back on the track I was hit by another car who pushed me out. I managed to return on the track but the car was much slower, my rear bar was broken. I am very disappointed because the result does not show our level of performance, we suffered various problems this week-end but we are working hard and we look forward the next races."
Bruce Lorgere-Roux : "On the first lap I did a flat spot on Adelaide braking, my car was difficult to drive after that. After a good pit stop I was 8th (started 16th) and my aim was to keep position until the end, then I was pushed out by another car. Hopefully tomorrow I will have better race conditions as I will leave from the front row."
