A QUICK TOUR OF THE NURBURGRING!
After recent testing in Misano, the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0's thirty-six drivers moved on to the Nurburgring Grand Prix Circuit in Germany for the second of the official pre-season collective tests. The first of the World Series by Renault categories to test here has certainly not disappointed in terms of competitiveness and equality!
The Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 cars' first laps were completed on a wet track. Carlo Van Dam (SG Formula) and Junior Strouss, who has moved to the reputed Jenzer Motorsport Team, were the fastest drivers after yesterday's first session. The session provided most of the drivers with their first taste of the German track, a new addition to the 2006 calendar.
Conditions did not improve in the afternoon but Filipe Albunquerque (Motopark Academy), who finished fifth overall in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 in 2005, was still able to clinch the top position in 2'09:1, in front of the Finn Ate Mustonen (Koriainen Bross). Estonian driver Pentus (SG Formula) and Oliver Campos (Twincam Competition), two of the category's new drivers, were also very quick, both finishing in the top five.
Finally, this morning the Eurocup's fifteen teams started to record some serious times. Although it was quite windy, track conditions had improved, allowing Filipe Albunquerque to beat his best recorded lap time by almost 10 seconds! The New Zealand driver Van der Drift battled it out for the other top positions with Mustonen, Edwards and Piscopo.J Bad light ruined the early stages of this afternoon's session but the track then started to dry, allowing the drivers to get pretty close to the morning's lap times. Van der Drift was the quickest driver with a time of 2'10:37, followed by Mustonen, Waldschmidt, Van Dam, Frey and Clos.
This year's Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 features twenty new drivers from all over the world, including Bahrain native Salman Bin Rashid Al Khalifa, Formula BMW Asia Champion and a member of his country's royal family.
