Arthur Pic's clean sweep!
Two pole positions, two victories and the two fastest laps in the race gave Arthur Pic a clean sweep on the Brno circuit. The Tech 1 Racing driver has put himself back in the title chase with a vengeance and is now lying third overall. Aaro Vainio also upped his level of performance this weekend, and in its very first year in the championship, Tech 1 Racing is already ideally placed to win the teams' and drivers' titles!
Tech 1 Racing ventured into unknown territory in Brno in the Czech Republic for the third round of the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup. Only Arthur Pic knew the layout as he had won twice there in 2008 in the Formul'Academy Euro Series.
Some teams took advantage of the fact that they had already tested at Brno at the start of the year and dominated the first collective practice session. The Tech 1 Racing squad drivers worked methodically through setups to try and find a good overall balance for the cars in their new colours. Arthur Pic set the fastest lap of the day from Aaro Vainio. Hugo Valente ended up in seventeenth spot. .
In qualifying, Tech 1 Racing confirmed its excellent overall level of performance with Arthur Pic's two pole positions. "Even though Arthur had pulled a shoulder muscle he was a cut above the rest this weekend. His qualifying record since the start of the season is almost perfect with five poles and one second place. That's says everything about his raw speed," analysed Simon Abadie, the Tech 1 Racing Team manager. "Aaro's learning quickly and he managed to qualify twice in the top ten, for the first time this season. Things were a bit more complicated for Hugo. He wasn't all that quick this weekend and we have to analyse his performance in peace to see why it was the case. He wasn't where he should have been."
Pic was head and shoulders above his rivals in each of the two races. He scored two important flag-to-flag wins on Saturday and Sunday setting the fastest lap on both occasions. He has now moved from fifth to third in the championship ratings. Vainio continues his apprenticeship and finished fifth on Saturday and eighth on Sunday. Valente qualified far back on a circuit where overtaking is almost impossible and he saw the flag in twelfth on Saturday and fourteenth on Sunday.
"We're really delighted with our weekend," summed up Simon. "Arthur needed a weekend like this. It's simple - when he finishes he wins! He's scored three victories in six races and has pulled back several places in the championship. The ideal thing would be to do as well at Magny-Cours. We're also pretty happy with Aaro's results even we were expecting a little more from him. He's got what it takes to win a race before the end of the year. Hugo will have to forget this weekend after analysing it thoroughly and he too will be in the battle for victory. We're now in a position to go for the titles in both the drivers' and teams' championships and I really believe that we can win at least one of them. We'll do our very best!"
The season continues in France on 19th June on the Magny-Cours circuit where Tech 1 Racing will be out to add more wins to its tally.
