Misano Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0: Podium finish follows pitlane thriller for SG Formula
SG Formula didn't win at Misano, but the tale of this race will probably be remembered throughout the years by the members of the La Rochelle-based team.
When Tom Dillmann's engine broke short before the beginning of the qualifying session, the mechanics refused to let their driver down and succeeded in changing the engine in just one hour and 15 minutes. A fantastic job that really amazed the paddock! Tom rewarded the staff by setting second and third fastest times, and then secured his maiden podium in the category.
Team-manager Stephane Guerin comments: "I am doubly happy. It wouldn't have been possible without the incredible work done by the team. Tom proved strong for keeping concentrated as the session had already begun and the job was not quite finished on his car. He managed to push hard enough to offer us this front row position. Congratulations to all!"
Too much wheelspin at the start of race 1 allowed Adrian Zaugg ahead of the young Frenchman. But the driver from South Africa made a mistake so Tom could recover and catch the flag in second. This well-deserved result comes after his third time at Pau, followed by a crash at the beginning of the race, and a broken left foot at Istanbul.
Tom scored twice at Misano. In Race 2, he missed his start and fell from 3rd to 5th. Pushing hard again to recover, he made a mistake that dropped him back to 8th, then to 7th after the disqualification of the winner Dani Clos.He could be playing an interesting part in the championship, in which he is now 7th with 26 points.
Carlo Van Dam expected a good result on the Italian track where he performed well earlier this year, setting second overall time in March test sessions. "We were in trouble during the free practice sessions of Thursday and Friday" said Stephane Guerin. "Weather conditions were completely different compared to last winter's, so we were forced to define a brand new set-up for the qualifying session. Unfortunately, Carlo found it hard to cope with it." Overtaking is difficult in Misano, so the Dutchman concentrated on scoring as much points as possible and finished 8th on Saturday and 6th on Sunday. He is still 4th in the standings, with 26 points. Atte Mustonen in third owes the same total, and the gap with the current leader Dani Clos is only of 13 points, while a victory pays 15--
Estonian Sten Pentus came home twice, but a few mistakes didn't allow him to fight for championship points. "Sten is actually a fighter and he fought hard. His mistake in qualifying was a great shame, because he had to struggle in the pack. So he made further mistakes due to his lack of experience" said Stephane Guerin said.
SG Formula is still leading the Teams Championship after the Italian round of the Eurocup. The next one will take place at the Nurburgring, on the 5th and 6th of August.
