PIPPA MANN HOSPITALIZED AFTER FR 2.0 EUROCUP CRASH
Formula Renault driver suffers concussion in spectacular incident
It was a weekend of diverse fortunes for Pippa Mann as she participated in the second round of the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup at Istanbul this weekend. After securing her highest position of the year in Race One, Mann was involved in a spectacular incident in Race Two, which resulted in her admittance to hospital yesterday, where she was examined and released hours later.
Having qualified 20th on the grid, Race One showcased Mann's determination and overtaking ability as she battled among the 34-strong field to take a respectable 15th position. Coming across the finishing line just behind entrants such as Bertrand Baguette and Junior Strous clearly displayed Mann's improving season, which is gathering momentum race by race.
As she returned the following day for Race Two, Mann knew she had it all to do starting from 25th on the grid. With half the race remaining, Mann was lying in 18th position when she got a fantastic run on the car in front and executed an overtaking manoeuvre with precision. Behind her, Frederic Vervisch (SL Formula Racing) tried to follow Mann's move but was coming from too far back. He slammed into her rear wheels with an impact that threw his car into the air above Mann, heavily knocking her helmet and landing a heavy blow to her head. Unable to get out of the car unaided, Mann was removed by the stewards and taken to the nearest hospital for precautionary scans and X-rays. She had suffered a concussion to the head and was released later that day.
"I feel very sore and battered to be honest, but I'm alright," said a pragmatic Mann, who is intent on remaining positive about the weekend. "Obviously we're disappointed with how our race ended but we were running well before the incident, and I believe we were on for our second top 15 finish! We were quick and competitive here at Istanbul, and that's what I'll take from the weekend. I'm very much looking forward to getting back in the car for the race at Misano!"
