Double pole for Clos
By setting the two best times in the single qualifying session, Dani Clos (Jenzer Motorsport) took his first two pole positions in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0. The Spaniard will start alongside Carlo Van Dam (SG Formula) and Atte Mustonen (Koiranen Bros) on the two start grids.
All needing to post two good laps in the single qualifying 35 minutes, every driver was immediately out on track. With two sets of new tyres assigned to each driver for the meeting, the strategy is very simple: you have two runs to take two good positions on the starting grids.
The pace in the opening minutes was high. Carlo Van Dam improved his times twice in succession and held the fastest lap for nearly a quarter of an hour. But with 21 minutes gone, Kasper Andersen knocked the Dutchman off the top spot. Van Dam hit back two laps later to restore his superiority!
But it was down to Dani Clos to settle the dispute. With a lap in 1'54''348, followed by another in 1'54''236, the two pole positions went straight to the Spaniard!
Van Dam and Andersen kept on going right to the end but their efforts were in vain. After dominating proceedings yesterday in collective testing, Atte Mustonen (Koiranen Bros) was nevertheless able to earn himself a place on the front row for race two.
Behind the favourites were never far away with Adrian Zaugg (Cram Competition), Filipe Albuquerque (Motopark Academy) and Chris Van der Drift (JD Motorsport) all well poised to make their way through the field in the race!
Dani Clos: "The car was already going well on my first set of tyres, but it was even better on my second attempt. I hope to win some races here this weekend. So much has changed for me compared to 2005. Jenzer Motorsport has extensive experience and we're putting so much work into improving our performances."
Carlo Van Dam: "I'm very satisfied with qualifying here. Much more than I was in Zolder! It's already very hot so you have to get the fastest time on your very first lap on fresh tyres. My first run went well, but I made a mistake in the first sector on my second set of tyres."
Kasper Andersen: "We have been quick since the start of the season, but we just keep on improving. This is my best result in qualifying. It was very hot and the car was understeering a lot. But I guess it was the same for everyone. My primary objective is to finish the races, if possible on the podium! In any chance, there will be plenty of overtaking opportunities."
Atte Mustonen: "I'm a little disappointed because I was going for pole position. But I didn't feel comfortable with the car and the track was much hotter than yesterday. We will see what happens in the race. I hope to be able to claw back some places."
