José María López continues his flying road to Formula One. Last weekend the scenary was the German circuit of Oschersleben, where the Eurocup Formula Renault V6 disputed its eighth double round of the 2003 championship. The Argentinian one more time was the big protagonist of both races. He arrived second and first and took the leadership in the standings.
On saturday ¨Pechito¨ López started from the pole position but lost the place in hands of Japanese Kousuke Matsuura, who took the leadership and never left it until the end of the Grand Race. Despite José María lost time during the first laps of competition, the Argentinian improved his speed and close the gap with the leader. However the most difficult was about to come. A mistake of López in lap 17 made him go to pits earlier for the tyre change. In that moment a problem with the gear box made him lost a lot of time in the pits and returned delayed to the race in seventh position. It was time for the Argentinian to show one more time his talent. He iniciated a fantastic recovering and put his car number 37 in second place at the moment of the chequered flag.
¨It was my best race¨, he said after the podium. While he added: ¨Despite I didn`t win, I could recovered in a great way, I was the fastest during the last laps¨, López commented.
With Neel Jani scoring only two points and Tristan Gommendy nothing, ¨Pechito¨ jumped to the first place in the championship standings.
On sunday López wanted to continue with the good results. And so he did.
Again the driver of the French team Dams iniciated the race from the pole position, like almost always since the season opener.
During the first laps of competition, José María had an interesting argued with both drivers of the Arta Signature team, Matsuura and Gommendy. However in the final laps of the race López put in the track all the potential of his machine and built a gap of 12 seconds with the second finisher, Matsuura and 15 with Gommendy, the other man in the podium.
It was another impressive victory of ¨Pechito¨ López. The fourth this season that helped him to extend his leadership with 32 points over the French Gommendy. Jani, the other contender for the championship was sixth and left third in the tournament.
¨I`m very happy, I believe we did a great work. I couldn`t get the race on saturday to make of this a complete weekend. We are working in the team with the idea of the championship. This weekend we shown that we have a good car and that when I want some changes the team answers very good. We came to Germany looking the leadership in the standings, but I never expect to leave with so many points of difference¨, said López.
While the Argentinian continues adding victories for him and his team, a Formula One car seemes geting closer for López. Remember that the champion of the Eurocup FR V6 has a test in a Renault F1 at the end of the year.
The next round will be on Octobe 5th. at Estoril, Portugal. While the season closer will be at Monza on October 19th. López will continue his road to the F1 circus looking for more victories.
