SUCCESSFULL FIRST FORMULA 3 TESTS CARLO VAN DAM!

VLAARDINGEN, 15 OCTOBER 2006 -- Carlo van Dam has successfully tested and raced a full scale Formula 3 racing car last week on the race tracks of Oschersleben and Magione. The S-T-A-R-T driver who won the European Formula Renault 2.0 race in Le Mans last week, is starting to prepare for the next step in his motorsport career. After the successfull tests, the Dutchman will concentrate 100% on the races in the French Formula Renault 2.0 Championship which are held at Magny-Cours next weekend. A week later, Van Dam will attempt to win the European Formula Renault 2.0 championship. With only 4 points less than the leader of the field, the SG Formula-driver has a good chance to crown his hard work with the title.

On October 4th, Van Dam raced in a Formula 3 racecar for the first time in his carreer. The test was held on the Italian race track of Magione. Van Dam was invited by Prema Power Team, a team that won the title in the Formula 3 Euroseries with its driver Ryan Briscoe in 2003. On the track that is close to Peruggia, Van Dam started working with a French engineer and after giving his debut lap on the track he raced another 150 laps that day. With new tires the Dutchman was able to complete a lap in as fast as 1:06.7min on the 2,507km long curvy track. He outperfomed his Italian teammate Edoardo Mortara with this result. A day later, his engineer adapted the set-up of the car and Van Dam inproved his lap time to 1:05.7min. This result made him the fastest driver on that track on that weekend.

Last Thursday, Van Dam left for Germany where he met up with the Van Amersfoort Racing team again, the team with which he began his career in 2004 and with which he won the title of 'Best Rookie' in the Dutch Formula 2.0 championship. This year the team scored points on a regular basis with its two drivers Recardo Bruins and Dominick Muermans and the team plans on joining the German Recaro Formul a 3 Cup next season. Together with Muermans, Van Dam tested the cars that were used last season and on day 1 of the test he drove the fastest lap of the day with 1:20.8min on the 3.667km race track. On day 2 he gave everything again and drove his Opel-Spiess powered Formula 3 car to repeated victory through a 1:19.5min fastest lap of the day again.

CARLO VAN DAM: "Together with the board of S-T-A-R-T I went out as early as possible to get some orientation on my next motorsport season. We had a number of nice offers and I have met with 2 Formula 3 teams in the last weeks. The step-over from Formula 2.0 to Formula 3 went easy for me. A Formula 3 car has much more downforce and I like the improved ability to turn as a result of that. Both my test in Formula 3 went very smooth and I have been able to work well with the teams and engineers of both race teams. I have been able to look at some differences of the Mercedes-Benz and Opel-Spiess engines and the Kumho and Hankook tires. I'd like to thank Prema Power Team and Van Amersfoort racing for giving me these chances to get to know Formula 3. I have learned much. Now I will concentrate on the upcoming races in the French Formula Renault 2.0 championship and I hope to finish the season successfully at the end of October with the title in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 on the track of Barcelona!"
