Skerlong heads to Europe and the Formula Renault UK Winter Series
Mukilteo, Washington (October 12, 2006) -- Carl Skerlong announced today that having wrapped up the Formula TR Pro Series 2000 Championship last month, courtesy of 14 wins in 17 starts, he will now head to Europe for the first time in his burgeoning open-wheel racing career having signed with Fortec Motorsport to contest the four-round 2006 Formula Renault UK with Michelin Winter Series.
The 18-year-old Seattle-born racer will get his first taste of the United Kingdom next week following his participation in the final two rounds of the 2006 Formula TR Pro Series, held at Las Vegas Motor Speedway this weekend, 14th -- 15th October, where he races for Odyssey Motorsports in the same-spec Formula Renault 2.0ltr that he'll compete with in Europe.
With his regular North American season commitments completed, Carl's set to fly to England early next week to test with Fortec in advance of the opening two rounds of the Formula Renault UK Winter Series hosted at Brands Hatch, 4th -- 5th November, followed by the final two rounds a week later at the Croft Circuit, North Yorkshire, 11th November. Carl's pre-series test schedule includes a two-day run out at Croft next Wednesday and Thursday, 18th -- 19th October, followed by further test time with the championship-winning Daventry-based team at Snetterton and Brands Hatch a week later.
Fortec, with nine wins to-date in the 2006 Formula Renault UK Championship, have already clinched the Teams Championship with drivers Sebastian Hohenthal and Sam Bird leading the way, and they now head into this weekend's season-finale double-header at Silverstone with Hohenthal nine points ahead of title rival Patrick Hogan in the Drivers Championship after dropped scores.
Having claimed back-to-back championships in the Formula TR Pro Series, lifting the 1.6ltr title last season, with 14 wins, followed by the 2.0ltr crown this year, Carl is looking ahead to crossing the Atlantic for the first time to make his European open-wheel debut with Fortec:
"I'm thrilled to be racing with a team with the pedigree of Fortec Motorsport and in a competition as hotly contested as the Formula Renault UK Winter Series. I love racing the Formula Renault car, I've had success in both categories here in America and I'm looking forward to putting all that experience together and competing over in Europe. The Formula Renault UK Series has a great reputation for showcasing talent so naturally I'm pretty excited to be going there and seeing what I can achieve."
Richard Dutton, Team Principal of Fortec Motorsport, is equally pleased to have Carl join his team and bolster the line-up for the Formula Renault UK Winter Series:
"There's no doubting that Carl's got a great track record in America in just two full-time seasons of racing. He's proved himself to be competitive in both the Formula TR Pro Series and in a pair of starts in the Star Mazda Series this season. We're delighted to welcome him to Fortec and we look forward to working with him in the Winter Series and building on the pedigree we've already established in the Formula Renault UK Championship."
The Formula Renault UK with Michelin Championship has helped propel the likes of Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Pizzonia into Formula One with 2006 GP2 Series Champion, Lewis Hamilton, also a title-winning graduate of the championship.
