Formula Renault Birthday Party!
Patrick Long wins at Snetterton.

HARROLD, Bedfordshire, UK. American Patrick Long celebrated his 21st birthday in style on Sunday morning, taking a dominant wire-to-wire victory from pole in Round 8 of the Formula Renault UK Championship at Snetterton. Later in the day, Long scored another impressive result, earning a solid second place in Round 9 in his Fortec Motorsport-prepped machine.

After demonstrating a quick pace in mid-week testing, Long captured pole position for the double-race weekend by rocketing around the high-speed Snetterton circuit in 1:06.423 seconds. In the race, he was simply dominant, leading all 20 laps for a 1.1-second victory over Lewis Hamilton of Britain.

In the second race, Long started 3rd on the grid. (Starting positions were determined for Round 9 by a driver's second fastest qualifying lap.) He moved into second on lap one, behind Fortec teammate Jamie Green. He closed up on Green several times, but could never get in a position to make a clean pass. He followed Green across the line, 1.179 seconds behind.

"What a great way to celebrate your birthday!" said an ecstatic Long.

"Qualifying set the tone for the weekend. We took a different strategy for qualifying that was more to my liking -- and it worked. In the race, I opened a gap on Hamilton then just drove steady and conserved my tires. In the second race, I pressured Green but couldn't quite get by. But two podiums in one day is a fantastic result.

"Before the race, my father, who flew over from California to be here this weekend, asked me what I wanted for my birthday. I said 'all that matters is a win.' He brought me good luck. Now I just have to keep it going and score a few more wins and podiums."

Snetterton has always been one of Long's favorite circuits. Two years ago he captured his first Formula Ford victory, in the British FF Winter Series, at Snetterton.

Patrick Long's British Formula Renault challenge continues August 10-11 at Knockhill in Scotland. For more information on Patrick Long, visit his website at: www.patricklong.com. And to follow the British Formula Renault, log on to www.renaultmotorsports.co.uk or www.single-seaters.co.uk
