`Fast Lady' Legge in pole with fastest ever lap.
After qualifying on the NGK Laser Platinum Pole Position, Katherine Legge (Haslemere) is poised to make history at Oulton Park by becoming the first woman to win a round of the Formula Renault UK Championship.
Legge, aged 21, out-qualified the entire 35-strong Formula Renault field to grab top spot on the starting grid for tomorrow's second round of the championship at the Cheshire circuit. Her best lap time - an average of over 107mph - was the fastest ever for a Formula Renault car around the 2.4-mile Island circuit.
"Who says the girls can't do it!" said Legge. "It's a great feeling to have 34 men who all think they're faster behind me."
Starting alongside her will be Fortec Motorsport team-mate, championship leader Danny Watts (Northampton). Motaworld Racing's Robert Bell (Newcastle-upon-Tyne) and John Village Automotive's Ryan Sharp (Aberdeen) qualified third and fourth fastest. Completing the top six were Fortec's Jamie Green (Broughton Astley) and Motaworld's Gary Turkington (Portadown).
A maximum capacity grid of 30 Formula Renaults will start tomorrow's 18-lap race, round two of the championship, at 13.45.
