Ace Swedish driver Richard Goransson will race in this Easter weekend's opening round of the Formula Renault UK Championship at Brands Hatch after striking an 11th hour deal with the Cliff Dempsey Racing team.
Goransson, whose career is overseen by Formula One driver Mika Salo's management team, was a title protagonist and race-winner in last year's British Slick 50 Formula Ford Zetec series. He becomes the third Swede to join the championship alongside Robin Rudholm and Stefan Soderberg, while his name adds to the long list of top-line drivers competing in Formula Renault UK in 2002.
Although he will only have three sessions during Thursday's official test day to get used to his new environment, in Goransson's favour is the fact that he has driven Formula 3 machinery which, with slicks and wings, has similar characteristics to a Formula Renault. Vitally, he also has experience of Brands' full-length and rarely-used Grand Prix circuit, scene of Easter Monday's race.
The 23-year-old, on his way to Skavfta airport to catch his flight to the UK, commented: "Sure, I've got a lot to learn in a short space of time in Thursday's test, but I was quick straight away in both Formula Ford and Formula 3. I was also quick in Fords on the Brands GP circuit last year so I'd hope to be close to the pace. This is a one-off deal at the moment but we'll see what happens after that."
CDR team boss Cliff Dempsey, who also runs a car for 18-year-old son Keith - a race-winner in Formula Renault last season - commented: "Richard is a fantastic inclusion in our team - he and Keith will make excellent team-mates. In addition, he is undoubtedly extremely rapid and the fact he has experience of the Brands GP circuit makes him one to watch this weekend."
