Hamilton storms Brands Hatch test
Lewis Hamilton (Welwyn) set the fastest ever Formula Renault lap time around Brands Hatch's Grand Prix circuit in final testing ahead of the UK Championship's opening round of the season on Bank Holiday Easter Monday, 1st April.
The 17-year-old, a protigi of the McLaren Formula One team, set a best time in Thursday's official test of 1m24.399s. However, the Manor Motorsport team driver was only 16/1000ths of a second quicker than second fastest driver on the day, Paston Racing's Mark McLoughlin (Milton Keynes).
Motaworld Racing's winter champion Robert Bell (Newcastle-upon-Tyne) and Falcon Motorsport's Swedish driver Robin Rudholm (Milton Keynes) set the third and fourth fastest times, followed by Fortec Motorsport's Danny Watts (Northampton) and Cliff Dempsey Racing's Keith Dempsey (Ashbourne).
Of note is the fact that Watts won the first ever race for the new carbon fibre Formula Renault category - held on Brands' GP circuit in April 2000. His team-mate then, Finland's Kimi Raikkonen - the champion that year and now a McLaren F1 driver - set what still stands as the formula's race lap record around the 2.6-mile circuit. However, that was two seconds slower than times being achieved in today's test - an indication of the progress made by teams in developing their cars during the past two years.
Now the championship's 13 teams and 36 drivers look forward to Sunday's official half-hour qualifying session to determine which 30 go through to Easter Monday's 17-lap race.
