AFR championship Qualifying in Beijing, Alon grabbed pole again!!
The second race of the 2009 AFR series moved to the 2.39 km Beijing Goldenport International Circuit (BGIC) this weekend. BGIC is the shortest circuit the series will travel to this season but it posts another level of challenge for the 14 young drivers with respect to their precision driving and physical condition.
AFR is the anchor race of this week's Beijing Northern Race Super series. This new event is a new project designed by the Beijing Goldenport circuit with the intention of establishing its own signature racing event in the Northern region of China.
After two practice sessions in the morning under overcast sky and the typically hot weather in Beijing, the qualifying session started in the afternoon on time. At the end of the session, Alon Day of March3 team grabbed the pole position with a time of 1'03.363". Benjamin Rouget of ART and Zhang Zhi Qaing of March3 team qualified 2nd and 3rd with time of 1'03.601" and 1'03.956" respectively.
At the start of the qualifying, ART driver Benjamin Rouget went out attacking and got the best time immediately. The two March3 drivers Alon Day and Zhang Zhi Qiang were waiting in the pit area for around six or seven minutes before heading out to the track. Benjamin and Alon exchanged the lead a few times and continue trimming the qualifying time down to the low 13" level which is almost half second faster than the time established in the morning practice sessions.
Both rounds of AFR championship will be held on Sunday and He Xiao Le of Ghia Sport Team will start on the second row besides Zhang Zhi Qaing. Jiang Teng Yi of FRD and Luis Sa Silva share the third row. Zhang Shan Qi of PTRS team did a much improved job and will start with Luca Ferigutti of ART on row 4.
