ART faces unknown track in the lead
The fourth round of the 2009 AFR Championship will take place next weekend at the Chengdu International Circuit in the Sichuan province of China. Luis Sa Silva, Benjamin Rouget and Luca Ferigutti will be driving once again for Asia Racing Team, two weeks after the two consecutive victories in Shanghai.
Chengdu Goldenport Circuit, also known as Chengdu International Circuit in English, is a brand new venue for Asian Formula Renault. The 3.367 km clockwise circuit features a long front straight and 13 turns, the track is likely to promote overtaking due to its wide nature. None of the three ART drivers had opportunity to drive in this track before but everyone in the team is confident about getting a good result next weekend.
ART Team manager Philippe Descombes looks ahead to the Chengdu weekend saying: "We're heading to a venue that is an unknown quantity for most of us and we are talking about a very technical track. This last part of the season starting in Chengdu is going to be exciting for everyone but at the same time it means greater pressure and consequently more responsibility is required. We will look at every single race individually but Benjamin and Luis are definitely title contenders. They need to be on top-3 in Chengdu if they want to be champions, and that's where we want to be. For Luca the target is different. He is improving race after race, and he count on him to help us in this second half of the season".
The AFR Championship Round 4 will be part of the successful C1 Challenge Show at Sichuan Province capital. "It's good to present Asian Formula Renault at new locations and open up new audiences to the series. C1 Challenge Show weekend at Shanghai was a tremendous success with 15,000 people in grandstands. This is what the drivers' sponsors are looking for", said ART Marketing & PR Manager Sergio Fonseca.
Asia Racing Team is currently leading the team standings with Rouget in 2nd and Sa Silva in 3rd in the driver standings.
Chengdu Circuit lies 16 kilometres west of Chengdu City, known as the 'City of Abundance' and the fifth most populous city in China. Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan Province, home to 100 million people.
The Race 7 of the AFR Championship will be held on Saturday, September 12, and Race 8 on Sunday, September 13.
