The Formula Renault 2000 Championship was engaged in two races this weekend on the legendary race track of Spa. Luca Casadei tackled one of his favourite tracks with very few test sessions on his back: the lack of testing kilometres made it difficult for him to fine tune the car. In fact, problems with the set up of the car prohibited Casadei from having a good qualifying session . He was 23° in the first session and 14° in the second session. However, thanks to the good work performed by Luca and BVM Racing, Luca showed up on the starting grid with a good set up and a well performing car.
The first race was marked by the rain and Luca's lack of experience and visibilty on a wet track didn't allow him to do his best. The second race ended on a more sour note. Luca started off well and recuperated a few positions but soon after , was hit on a straight by Grant Maiman who was driving a Jenzer. This impact that sent Luca off track and that caused him hit the barrier, caused serious damage to the single seater. Luckily, Luca was unhurt.
"I'm leaving one of my favourite tracks with a lot of anger inside of me! We were only able to find the perfect set up for the race while for both qualifying sessions, we suffered a lot. I wanted to repay the team for all of its hard work and for giving me a well balanced car for the race. Unfortunately, the 1st race took place under some heavy rain and I paid a high price for this. I was 24th on the starting grid and the lack of visibility did not allow me to recuperate any positions. Instead during the second race which was on a dry track, I was able to inherit 3 positions. Unfortunately when I was on the straight, I was hit. Maiman ,in the hopes to slipstream, calculated the distances wrong and hit my back wheel. I was left with an out of control car, with the impact on the barricades and a real fright. Happily, I only have a few scratches but all the work done together with BVM Racing disappeared in an instant. "
Giovanni Minardi, Manager
"If the lack of experience on a wet track and the lack of visibility didn't allow Luca to inherit some positions during the first race, then the irresponsible behaviour of Mainam prohibited Luca from finishing the race and from being one of the fastest drivers. Gladly, nothing happened to Luca but it could have been worse. I think that drivers who commit errors of this sort should be severely punished by the appropriate authorities."
