The Sports Car Club of America will sanction the 2016 U.S. FIA Formula 4 Championship in conjunction with the U.S. arm of the FIA, the Automobile Competition Committee of the United States.

Formula 4 is currently the FIA’s first step on the open-wheel racing ladder to Formula 1 and championships are nationally based in Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Japan and China, among other countries.

Let’s not fight each other, we’re all in it because we’re passionate about ladder series open wheel racing

The car is being developed with a Crawford chassis and a 2.4L Honda engine that is being homologated for the category. A complete car will set the owner back approximately $51,600.

Where does it fit as a ladder series?

Robert Clarke, president of SCCA Road Racing, had been in talks with Dan Andersen and the Mazda Road to Indy about forging a relationship with them despite not being under the Andersen Promotions banner.

“We’ve had discussions, we’ve met with them, they’ve had some concerns that this was in competition with them, we argued that because it falls below USF2000, we see it as a feeder series to [their ladder],” Clarke said.

“Our vision is about promoting motorsports. The conversation I've had with Dan Andersen is that, ‘let’s not fight each other, we’re all in it because we’re passionate about junior open-wheel racing, we want to see more kids in cars, we want to see it prosper and bring attraction from both the participants and fan base, so let’s find a way to work together, we don’t have to fight,’ " Clarke told Motorsport.com.

Clarke said that FIA F4 races will be run on the same weekend as Pirelli World Challenge and Trans Am series' events with three races per weekend and five rounds in 2016, with events taking place in the eastern half of the United States. A western regional championship was not ruled out for future years.
