Spielberg F3: Stroll storms to double pole

Prema Powerteam driver Lance Stroll took control of the second European F3 qualifying at Spielberg, picking up poles for Race 2 and Race 3.

The Canadian's final flyer ensured that he'd end the session as quickest, going just 0.002s clear of HitechGP rival George Russell.

However, the best time clocked in the session did not belong to Stroll, but to teammate and Race 1 poleman Maximilian Gunther.

But just like Gunther profited from a track limits penalty for Joel Eriksson in the first session, he himself fell foul of the rule and his lap of 1m23.040s was not counted, leaving Stroll's 1m23.178s as the benchmark.

Van Amersfoort Racing driver Callum Ilott was third, followed by two impressive rookies Niko Kari and David Beckmann.

Kari's fellow Red Bull junior Sergio Sette Camara will line up right behind him in sixth, with Prema duo Gunther and Aron making up row four.

On second-best times, Stroll will be joined by Ilott on the front row.

Beckmann, contesting his second weekend in the series, was set to line up third, but was demoted to fifth behind Kari and Aron, with Russell, Gunther and Eriksson making up the top eight.
