Spielberg F3: Gunther loses Race 1 pole for ignoring yellow flags

Maximilian Gunther, who had inherited pole for the first European F3 race at Spielberg after Joel Eriksson's track limits infringement, was himself handed a post-session penalty, giving up the spot to Callum Ilott.

Spielberg F3: Gunther loses Race 1 pole for ignoring yellow flags

Gunther lost his fastest lap - a 1m23.908s - in the session for ignoring yellow flags, but his second-best time is good enough to see him line up on the front row, just 0.018s off Van Amersfoort Racing driver Ilott.

The race will mark a maiden pole position start for Ilott, who already has a win in the series to his name.

Like Gunther, Ferrari protege Guan Yu Zhou was also found guilty of ignoring yellow flags and lost his 1m24.241s lap that would have originally seen him line up eighth on the grid.

Instead, the Chinese driver will start the race from 16th.
