Italian Antonio Giovinazzi (Jagonya Ayam with Carlin) came out on top in second qualifying of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship at the 4.326 kilometres long Red Bull Ring. In the ranking of the second-fastest lap times to determine the starting grid positions for the third race, he was also classified first. Thus, the 20-year old claimed the first-ever pole positions of his career in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. Tom Blomqvist (Jagonya Ayam with Carlin) secured a pair of second places. In the ranking of the fastest laps, Austrian Lucas Auer (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport) ended up third on the grid for his home race from Antonio Fuoco (Prema Powerteam). In the second-fastest laps, Fuoco and Esteban Ocon (Prema Powerteam) were classified third and fourth respectively.

Starting grid race 2

With a little less than nine minutes remaining, qualifying was briefly interrupted after Hector Hurst’s (Team West-Tec F3, 1:28.797 minutes) Dallara-Mercedes had come to a halt on the start-and-finish straight. The Brit’s car had to be towed into the pit lane before qualifying resumed. At the time of the interruption, Antonio Giovinazzi (1:24.748 minutes) was in the lead from Tom Blomqvist (1:25.036 minutes) and Antonio Fuoco (1:25.090 minutes). In the remainder of the session, nobody managed to topple the two Jagonya Ayam with Carlin drivers Giovinazzi and Blomqvist from first and second place.

Lucas Auer (1:25.042 minutes), the only Austrian in the field, was classified third from Antonio Fuoco and Felix Rosenqvist (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport, 1:25.114 minutes). Esteban Ocon (1:25.199 minutes), the current FIA Formula 3 European Championship points’ leader, had to make do with sixth place. His main rival in the battle for the title, Max Verstappen (Van Amersfoort Racing, 1:25.212 minutes) was classified seventh. Jordan King (Carlin, 1:25.298 minutes) secured eighth place at the end of the 20 minutes’ qualifying session.

Starting grid race 3

In the ranking of the second-fastest lap times, Antonio Giovinazzi (1:24.773 minutes) and Tom Blomqvist (1:25.102 minutes) also came out in first and second place. As a result, the two will also be starting from the front row of the grid for the 24th race of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship season. Rookie driver Antonio Fuoco (1:25.166 minutes) will be starting third from Esteban Ocon (1:25.203 minutes), Lucas Auer (1:25.312 minutes), Max Verstappen (1:25.385 minutes), Jake Dennis (Carlin, 1:25.416 minutes) and Felix Rosenqvist (1:25.562 minutes).

Antonio Giovinazzi (Jagonya Ayam with Carlin): “Qualifying was really good. I was already on top before the red flags came out and after I had both my left-hand side tyres changed, my car was still running great. Now, I am looking forward to the two races and I hope to score a top result once again. The Red Bull Ring is one of my favourite circuits and therefore, I was already optimistic coming to Austria. Now, I am happy that I have secured these two pole positions.”
