Super Pole shoot-out added to Formula E qualifying format

The Formula E series is set to change its qualifying format for season two, adding a pole shoot-out for the five fastest drivers after the four group sessions.

Robin Frijns, Amlin Andretti
Sam Bird, Virgin Racing

During its inaugural season, the category held qualifying sessions in groups of five drivers, adding up their times to a single classification that made up the grid.

That process will be unchanged for determining grid spots from sixth to 20th in season two, albeit the four group runs themselves will be shortened to six minutes, leaving the drivers with only one flying lap attempt.

The top five as a result will qualify for Super Pole and will go out one after one in the final session, with the fifth-fastest driver heading out first and the pacesetter exiting the pits last.

"Pushing the car to the limit and brushing against the walls around a street circuit in qualifying is a real spectacle and one of the highlights of a Formula E event,” said Formula E boss Alejandro Agag. “With this new qualifying format, it will ensure the battle for pole position will go down to the wire."
