Motorsport.com can reveal that Carroll, who had his seat-fitting last Monday, has been chosen by the Anglo-Japanese team to fill in for Felix da Costa, who has a clashing DTM commitment at the Red Bull Ring.
The deal could be confirmed later this week, while Fanboost confirmation for Carroll is expected to be issued shortly by Formula E Holdings Ltd, as his name has been submitted to the FIA as a replacement for Felix da Costa.
This means that if Carroll is not officially confirmed for Berlin, it will constitute another driver change and fine for Team Aguri as it will have already reached its allowed driver changes for season two.
Carroll, 33, has been on several occasions close to driving in the all-electric championship. He tested for both Mahindra and NEXTEV last summer, and was on standby for an injured Nick Heidfeld at Mahindra for the Buenos Aires ePrix in February.
The Nothern Irishman also had a seat fitting at the DS Virgin team when Jean-Eric Vergne was taken ill at the same event.
Chinese takeover nears completion
Confirmation of the deal with Carroll was set to be made last week, but ongoing uncertainty surrounding the now-cancelled Moscow ePrix date and also discussions for a takeover of Team Aguri by Chinese Media Capital are delaying it.
A statement from Team Aguri read: "We will be making an announcement about our driver line up for the Berlin ePrix shortly. We have been in conversation with a number of drivers and will provide more information in due course.”
Motorsport.com understands the deal between Team Aguri and CMC was set to be concluded last Friday.
It remains unclear whether the transaction went through or not, while it is known that a last-minute bid by a rival Formula E team to take over Aguri has not gone through.
Should the deal be rubberstamped, it will mean a complete new entity and team entrant name and the winding down of the current Team Aguri set-up, which will cease to operate after the final race in London.
Current Team Principal Mark Preston is expected to remain at the new-look squad for season three, as is driver Ma Qing Hua.
Plans for a Nissan-branded Renault powertrain in season three for the new team is expected to be confirmed at the London ePrix in July, but is dependent on the deal with CMC going through.
