Nelson Piquet Jr. took a surprise fastest lap time in a messy final practice session ahead of qualifying for this afternoon's Berlin ePrix.

The reigning champion set a best lap of 57.909s lap in his NEXTEV TCR FormulaE 001 car after having missed most of the session with a battery problem on one of his car but took his frustration out in the most positive way to lead the field.

The session was red flagged after 16 minutes when Stephane Sarrazin crashed heavily at Turn 11.

The French driver suffered significant damage to the front left of one of his Venturi VM200-FE-01 cars but emerged unhurt.

Second fastest was Sam Bird in the leading DS Virgin entered car. He headed teammate Jean-Eric Vergne by just 0.157s.

The Frenchman survived losing his front wing endplate late in the session to continue his good recent form.

Robin Frijns was fourth for Andretti ahead of Oliver Turvey and Loic Duval while Lucas di Grassi placed 12th after struggling to get a clear full power lap in his Abt Schaeffler FE01 car.

Championship protagonist Sebastien Buemi suffered a nightmare start as he nosed his Renault Z.E.15 in to the Turn 5 barrier after just five minutes of the session.

The Beijing and Punta Del Este winner managed to get back to the pits after damaging his front wing but was soon back on track but suffered another braking issue on his next flying lap. He ended the disrupted session in 15th position.

Rene Rast (Team Aguri) and Jerome d’Ambrosio (Dragon) stopped their cars and caused further yellow flags after the initial Sarrazin induced red flag. Rast placed 17th, while d’Ambrosio was 13th for Dragon.

The lead Mahindra of Bruno Senna was seventh ahead of Daniel Abt, Mike Conway and Nick Heidfeld rounded of the top 10.
