GIEDO VAN DER GARDE FINISHES 4th , JUST OFF THE PODIUM.
SERGIO PEREZ HOPES RUINED IN THE FIRST LAPS.
Giedo van der Garde finished the first GP2 race at the Valencia Street Circuit in 4th position. His team-mate at Barwa Addax Team, Sergio Perez finished 11th after being hit from behind by a rival, which caused engine problems for the rest of the race.
Giedo van der Garde, who began from fifth position on the starting grid, drove a fine race helped by a good set up which enabled him to gain one position. He kept up a good race rhythm throughout and was fighting it out among the leading positions. After making his compulsory pit stop he found himself in sixth place but was able to make up two positions, and was even pressuring the third placed driver in the last few laps looking for the final podium position. Tomorrow the Dutch driver will start from fifth position on the grid.
All Sergio Perez's hopes of winning this race were dashed when he was unceremoniously shunted from behind. After having set pole position, the Mexican driver made a great start and he got to the first corner well ahead of the rest of his rivals and was looking to make a clean break when Maldonado broke far too late and made contact with the rear of Sergio's car. The contact affected the exhaust pipe to such an extent that the engine started to radically under-perform. He was soon overtaken by Bianchi, and Valsechi, who was just behind wanted to take advantage of the situation and he collided with the side of the Spanish car causing him to spin and leaving him in last place. Nevertheless he was able fight back to 11th despite his engine problems.
In the constructor's championship Barwa Addax Team remain second overall thanks to their two drivers being in the top five positions overall. Giedo climbs to third position and Sergio remains fifth in the overall rankings.
Tomorrow the second race in Valencia takes place and will start at 10.35 in the morning and will be raced over 23 laps of the circuit.
