ROMAIN GROSJEAN ACHIEVES F1 STATUS, AFTER HIS SUCCESS WITH BARWA ADDAX TEAM, AS NEW TEAM-MATE OF FERNANDO ALONSO.
HE IS REPLACED BY DAVIDE VALSECCHI FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE SEASON.
Barwa Addax Team has achieved one of its prime objectives, being a platform for drivers whose ambition is to make it to Formula 1. Renault has decided that its number 3 driver, Romain Grosjean, is now ready to make the step up to F1. His performances with the Spanish team have convinced the Renault team that he is prepared to drive the R29. For this reason he will be leaving the ranks of GP2 to step up as official driver for the French Formula 1 team and will compete in this weekend's European Grand Prix at the Valencia Street Circuit. Furthermore Brazilian driver, Lucas di Grassi, who had such a good season in 2008 with Alejandro Agag's team, will take over from Grosjean as third driver for Renault, a role which he had last season combining GP2 with his F1 duties in Flavio Briattore's team.
This is the result of the exceptional work carried out by the Barwa Addax Team as well as Romain Grosjean and Lucas di Grassi, throughout these last two seasons in the GP2 Series, which has meant that after a tremendous start to the season, drivers and team were leading the overall rankings and last season the team won the overall team title in 2008 with Lucas finishing third overall in the drivers championship.
Romain has been without doubt the shining light of the current season in the GP2 Series and "has shown a tremendous sense of gratitude to all the members of the prestigious Barwa Addax Team for the way he has been treated and for the great work carried out together. He is also grateful for the opportunity to demonstrate his undoubted talent and the capacity to continue making progress in his sporting career".
The owner of Barwa Addax Team, Alejandro Agag stated: "It has been a pleasure to work with Romain Grosjean and Lucas di Grassi. We are absolutely delighted with their progress and their step up to formula 1 because for the drivers it gives them the experience of the essence of a working union in the last stage before the main class in world motor-racing. The whole team wishes them the very best in their promising sporting careers, at the same time thanking them for their hard work and dedication and for their efforts during the time spent, in which they formed part of the Barwa Addax Team".
At the same time we would like to announce that Davide Valsecchi will fill the seat left vacant by the French-Swiss driver, thanks to the agreement reached with Renault Driver Development for the current season. The young promising 22 year old Italian driver (24-01-87) is competing for the second year running in the GP2 class. He finished in 15th position overall last season and 8th in the GP2 Asia Series 2008. After the first half of the season he currently lies 13th in the overall drivers rankings, having achieved one podium in the long race at the Turkish Grand Prix after having had a fantastic season in the Asia Series 2009, where he finished fourth overall just two points behind the second placed driver, winning one race and finishing on the podium on four occasions.
