GP2 Valencia: difficult week-end for Alexandre Premat (FRA) - ART Grand Prix

The opening round of the GP2 series at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo, Valencia, didn't exactly finish like Alexandre Premat (FRA) - ART Grand Prix was expecting.

The lessons learned will provide good experience for what promises to be a fierce battle in the championship this year.

QUALIFYING

With tricky conditions owing to the lack of grip on the track, Alexandre Premat (FRA) - ART Grand Prix was caught out by traffic and yellow flags on the tight circuit in Valencia. Finally, Alexandre Premat - ART Grand Prix finished qualifying in 9th place. The track was not easy:

it was quite cool and it is quite a small, tight circuit. Alexandre Premat had problems with his brake pedals which the team couldn't correct in time. He also hit a bit of traffic But Alexandre in for a struggle in the race on a circuit where it is famously difficult to overtake.

RACE 1

Alex made a blistering start from ninth on the grid to fifth by the end of the first lap in race one at Valencia. Premat's charge was put on hold when his ART Grand Prix car developed problems with its brakes and he dropped down to ninth.

"It was a very tight start with 26 powerful cars on this very narrow track," Alex said. "I climbed up two rows at the start. Our strategy was to make an early pit stop on lap eight of 45.

The pit stop worked well the team was great and when I came out I was able to fight up the order even further. My brakes were in bad condition and I went off the track which let my team mate pass me," Premat added. "At that point I just wanted to bring the car home and score some points, but it was really dangerous with the brakes.

I eventually finished in ninth which is disappointing considering the pace I had today.

We should have finished in second position this race. Sometimes there are highs, sometimes there are lows."

RACE 2

An accident with Adrian Valles (Campos Racing) Valles puts an end to Alexandre Premat's hopes of a good finish in sunday afternoon's GP2 series race at Circuit Ricardo Tormo, Valencia, after starting the race from ninth on the grid.

Today's race was initially shortened to 29 laps after it was decided to run two formation laps before the first scheduled race start to ensure every driver had a chance to put heat into his rubber. With the two formation laps over, the first start was aborted as a number of drivers stalled, and so a third formation lap was run.

"There were no problems for me at the start.

Considering that I started from ninth I had good hopes of climbing up into a good points scoring position," Premat said. "I had a good pace during the start of the race and passed a few cars right away.

During the warm-up I tested a few of the changes that the mechanics had worked on to improve the car and it all looked so good for us. Dropping out of a race after just a few laps really isn't me."

"There was nothing I could do. I was passing Adrian Valles (Campos Racing) in turn seven of the third lap when he pushed me off the track. It was a real shame because I had a good start and the car was very quick. I don't know why Valles pushed me onto the grass maybe he had some problems with his car. The impact was hard enough to break my suspension and that was it. I'm really disappointed I couldn't score any points this weekend.

At this early stage of the season Nelson Piquet Jr leads the championship on 16 points, with Nicolas Lapierre second on 10 and Lewis Hamilton close behind in third on 9 points.
