Trident Racing Valencia Race 1 Report

Valencia Street Circuit

Trident Racing did not collect what the team expected today in the first race of the GP2 Main Series weekend at Valencia Street Circuit. After having provided the team with an aggressive first stint of the race, Rodolfo Gonzalez ended up in 15th place, while Stefano Coletti, who hit troubles right from the start, finished his race in the 17th position.

Gonzalez, who took-off from the 24th place, managed to climb back to the 8th place, but a mistake on lap 8 and a general fade in the car's performances plagued his run as he was forced to give several spots away in the closing stages.

Coletti's race was heavily conditioned by the issue he had when his engine stalled at the start. Stefano re-started last but managed to catch the tail of the pack. A penalty for speeding on pit road eventually put an end to his chances to recover.

Following to today's results, Coletti will take-off from the 9th row on race 2, while Gonzalez will start from the 15th spot. The closing race of the weekend at Valencia will go green tomorrow at 10:30, with live coverage in Italy by RAI 2 inside free-to-air magazine “Numero Uno”.

Rodolfo Gonzalez, 15th

“I believe I really gave the best I could today. The start has been good for me and for much part of the race I kept defending my position by battling my way into the points zone. In the second part of the race I esperienced a progressive fade in the car's performance as the tires started to wear out badly. It's a pity, because I thought I could have had a shot at the 8th place with a chance to start from the pole on tomorrow's race 2.”

Stefano Coletti, 17th

“Just as soon as I started to disengage the clutch the engine stalled. I can't figure out what happened exactly, but my race was off to a tough start then. After changing tires, while I was making my way out of the pit-lane, I turned off the speed limiter slightly before it was allowed, and as a consequence I was assessed a drive-through. It hasn't been a lucky day, and even while I was running with a clean racetrack, I couldn't match the leading contenders' laptimes...”
